AI Images in Architecture & Design
We’ve been discussing AI image generation in the studio for a while now and watched the technology develop at a rapid pace. As architects and designers, introducing AI into our workflow is an interesting prospect. It would allow us to quickly create realistic visualisations of our ideas with the bonus of being able to generate multiple variations of a design and explore different lighting or environmental conditions at the click of a button.
Additionally, AI image generation could be used to generate images of designs that may not be feasible to build in real life, allowing us to push the boundaries of what is possible and to experiment with new forms and shapes.
Whilst we get to grips with this new technology and consider it’s real world use, we decided to have a bit of fun with it. After debating our favourite iconic buildings from around the world we tasked AI with imagining 9 of them as original architectural models, the results are below.
How many of them can you identify? You can find the answers at the end of the post.
What makes a building architecturally iconic?
A building may be considered architecturally iconic for a variety of reasons. We made our choices based on historical or cultural significance, technical innovation, and impact on the field of architecture. And, crucially – design aesthetic, uniqueness, and timelessness. You can click the images in the gallery to learn more about each building.
Whilst we were on this AI riff we thought we’d ask ChatGPT to finish off this post with a Haiku about architecture…
