Placemaking & The Outdoor Environment
The Studios is a dynamic community project that continues to evolve and thrive. Spearheaded by EDW, the original concept sought to revitalise a row of neglected garages, transforming them into a collection of small studio spaces designed to home burgeoning start-up businesses. Since then, our involvement has expanded, encompassing ventures such as integrating a Remote Possibilities pod into The Scandinavian Coffee Pod and collaborating with Four Cats on the interior design of their distinctive bottle shop.
The latest development for this Civic Award-winning project is to elevate the outside space, through a simple landscaping and placemaking scheme.
By strategically curating the outdoor environment, we enhance the overall experience for tenants and visitors alike. Our objective is to cultivate a vibrant and engaging atmosphere that stimulates creativity, fosters connections, and promotes a strong sense of community.
“By understanding the context and the needs of the community, architects and environmental graphic designers can craft outdoor spaces that foster a sense of place.”
The Power of Simple Placemaking
Placemaking doesn’t have to be an extravagant or costly endeavour. With a modest budget, it is still possible to establish a strong sense of place by repurposing items and providing sensory experiences. By focusing on elements such as painted walls and festoon lighting, an ordinary space can be transformed into a vibrant and inviting environment that resonates with its users.
