Situated in the heart of Cheltenham’s ‘Old Town’ and within the Central Conservation Area, St. Matthew’s Church stands as a testament to the city’s architectural heritage and cultural legacy. A Grade II listed structure renowned for its Gothic Revival architecture and with rich historical significance presented a significant challenge to our design team.
Our proposed signage design is influenced by three main factors. Firstly, We carefully considered the existing wayfinding in the immediate area and incorporated that into our plans. Secondly, we prioritised aligning our design with the church’s character to respect its architectural heritage. Lastly, we emphasised the need for clear and informative displays to cater to the diverse needs of visitors and worshippers.
From a bespoke totem sign guiding visitors to sister location The Cheltenham Minster, to low-level ‘no parking’ signs discreetly placed around the car park, each element of the signage plan has been considered to compliment the church’s aesthetic.
This initiative is a joint effort to preserve St Matthew’s Church’s architectural heritage while enhancing its functionality and accessibility for the community. We are committed to heritage preservation, thoughtful design, and community engagement as we progress. Stay tuned for updates on our work in Cheltenham’s cultural landscape.
